The Funky Drummer - The Most Sampled Drum Break Of All Time?
Who or what is "The Funky Drummer"?
The "Funky Drummer" is a song created in 1969 by the legendary funk/soul singer James Brown (who sadly passed away in 2006). It was originally released as a vinyl single in 1970 by King Records (with A and B-sides) and re-released in 1986 by Polydor Records as part of the compilation album "In The Jungle Groove". The re-release incorporates the A-side and B-sde into a single track entitled "Funky Drummer (Parts 1 & 2)" and is 9 minutes 13 seconds long - this is the version I will be focusing my attention on.
This track is simply the grooviest slice of music I have ever heard in my life. It is a superb feel-good track that conveys a lively party atmosphere and just makes you want to MOVE!!!! Don't believe me? Scroll down and have a listen for yourself. Essentially it consists of a group of talented session musicians (dubbed the James Brown Orchestra) all riffing together and improvising for that live feel. Sax, trombone, trumpet, organ and guitar play off each other and fuse with James Brown's vocals over an infectiously funky rhythm played by drummer Clyde Stubblefield. Nine minutes sounds like a long time, but it flies by whenever I listen to "Funky Drummer" thanks to the skilled performances of all the musicians.
You can tell that James Brown is enjoying the drumming as half-way through the track he says:
"Fellas... one more time I wanna give the drummer some of this funky solo we got here...
You don't have to do no soloing brother just keep what you got. Don't turn it loose, 'cause it's a mutha...
When I count to 4 I want everyone to lay out and let the drummer go, and when I count to 4 I want you to come back in"
We can deduce that the track was actually named after the drummer Clyde Stubblefield, which is why "The Funky Drummer" is also regularly used as his nickname as well as referring to the song.

More specifically, it is the drum solo by Clyde Stubblefield at 5:22 that is the source of all the sampling.
