Ich muss zugeben, den Namen bislang nur einmal beiläufig gelesen zu haben. Nun hab ich mir ein wenig Zeit genommen und bin schwer angetan.

Channy Caselle hat nach dem Ende ihrer Band Roma di Luna einige Freunde um sich geschaart um diese Platte aufzunehmen und unter anderem mit „ClapYourHandsSayYeah“ und „Gayngs“ entlang der Ostküste der USA zu touren.

Chris Bierden am Bass, Drew Christopherson und Ben Ivascu an den Drums schaffen es, ein für meine Begriffe riesiges Album einzuspielen, von dem wir noch sehr viel hören werden.

Channy sagt zu den eingespielten Songs und der Stimmenbearbeitung mit den AutoTune:
„Once I started learning how to use it, I realized how much more adventurous I could be with my voice and my writing. It sort of adds drama to everything, and I love the way it affects the voice like a guitar pedal — it makes your voice seem more like an instrument.“

Na so was. Zunächst mal besteht der Chinese Man aus drei Mann: Sly, DJ High Ku und Ze Mateo. Und dann ist er, bzw. sind sie auch noch Franzosen. In ihrer Heimat haben sie sich mit ihren Turntable-Fähigkeiten schon durch eine Mixtape-Reihe einen gewissen Ruf verschafft, jetzt satteln sie mit Hilfe einiger Guests groß auf für das Rennen mit der Sonne. Und so wie die jeden Tag aufgeht, wird man auch diese Platte lange Zeit immer wieder kreisen lassen – denn wie Sonnenstrahlen macht auch Racing with the sun glücklich.



Eine derart lässige, abwechslungsreiche und witzige Groove-Mischung wird einem nicht alle Tage aufgetischt. Hip Hop und Reggae treffen sich zum Armdrücken, Loungefeeling und unzählige, fein ausgewählte obskure Soundschnipsel aus Filmen und obskuren Platten vervollständigen das Hörbild. Da reist der China-Mann in 80.000 Samples um die Welt, von Asien über Amerika nach Jamaika und dann nach Europa. Anspieltipp: Die lieblich zirpende Miss Chang. Ein großer Spaß!

Apollo Four Forty - The Future's What It Used To Be

Zitat:When was the last time you heard about Apollo 440? Frankly, although I am not a fanatic of football, and even less of football teams, it was when I first found out that the FA Cup charity theme song of Liverpool F.C. was provided by them. However, the nine years that passed since their latest album, “Dude Descending a Staircase”, there was enough Apollo 440 aired and since 2007, when they resumed their touring activity, it’s been as if they have never left the scene. Of course, the thirst for new Apollo 440 material was there, but also the signs. No less than nine Apollo 440 remixes were featured in the 20 year anniversary edition of U2’s “Achtung Baby” in late 2011, and then the news of an Apollo 440 comeback followed shortly. And now it’s almost here: on Jan-30, out on their own Stealth Sonic Recordings label, the Liverpudlian group comes back with “The Future’s What It Used to Be”, their fifth studio album, and probably one of their best achievements so far.

With a crucial beat which functions like a ‘brush up your Apollo 440 in 3 minutes, “Stay Frosty” brings to mind older Apollo 440, which is at the same time endearing and appeasing, but it also brings a wider scope of the beat and since a lot of progress has been made in music production since their latest album, it sounds even better than what we used to know. It is just the beginning of a very profound trip, that continues with a very infectious “The Future Is What It Used to Be”, a definite lovemark and a great addition to the list of our favorite Apollo 440 tracks. Plunging in the deep mire of our conventionalist look into past and future, it surfaces in spontaneous, melodic bursts. A lot of charisma is exuded, and it’s a task that “Smoke & Mirrors” does not find hard to match. The music, the beat, the vocoder, the lyrics may remind of an earlier rave era, but hey, the future is what it used to be! So it’s just fine to bring that back into the 2010’s. “Smoke & Mirrors” counts, just like “Stealth Cantorum” among Viva Music favorites from the album. It has zest, it accommodates perfectly dance routines and is a factotum of the band’s willingness to show what they have been up to in recent years. “A Deeper Dub”, a wonderful rendition of the already classical “A Deeper Love” from C+C Music Factory is a rare bird, keeping essential hues and making over the track into an essential compilation item for this year, truly contemporary. And if all this sounds happy go lucky, then it is time for “Love Is Evil” to show you the other side of engagement, with cultural theorist Slavoj Zizek’s voice sampled from one of his most known diatribes against the evil purported by love (mind you, it is universal love and love that fails to emote and restore a cosmic balance that he is talking about). And the carbon print of very refined emotion that is left by this track invades luxuriously the next track, “Odessa Dubstep”, a frantic piece of music, that is surely to attract some massive attention from club dj’s and radio hosts. The same can be claimed without any lenience about both “Motorbootee” and “Traumarama”, tracks that play purposefully with musical notions Apollo 440 were and can be again loved for. Back to fancy, “Fuzzy Logic” with an interlude from Discordianist philosopher and illuminatus Robert Anton Wilson, is on the lighter music side, but laden with meaningful quotes and proving to be quite a potent manifesto for the kind of epoch we are currently living in. To cap the compilation, the final track, “Music Don’t Die” returns to the beat and flair we love in Apollo 440 and covers the silence with very enigmatic and at the same time revealing sounds.

“The Future’s What It Used to Be” is unsurprisingly a great album, and making worthwhile if not the entire nine year wait for the new album, at least the gaps left by the absence of Apollo 440 sounds in recent years. Because yes, they have been missed, and it is good to have them back. Enjoy!

Die gefällt mir richtig gut: Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory

In Musikzeitungen wird zu viel über Produzenten geschrieben, niemand weiß, was sie wirklich tun, Rick Rubin liegt angeblich nur auf dem Sofa rum, und Ross Robinson ist so lange gemein zu seinen Bands, bis sie New Metal machen. Gut für uns also, dass Steve Albini kein Produzent ist, sondern Soundingenieur, so kann man ohne schlechtes Gewissen schreiben, dass er den Großteil der Attack On Memory-Sessions mit Online-Scrabble verplempert hat und trotzdem das Beste war, was Cloud Nothings passieren konnte. Die Band aus Cleveland/Ohio hat 2010 und 2011 jeweils ein Indiepop-Album veröffentlicht, beide wurden vom heute 20-jährigen Frontmann Dylan Baldi weitgehend alleine eingespielt. Cloud Nothings hatten danach zwei Optionen: Sie hätten noch ein paar Jahre so weitergehen können ohne irgendjemandem zu schaden oder viel zu bringen, sich dann auflösen und Baldi eine Abendschule besuchen können. Oder sie hätten Attack On Memory machen können. Cloud Nothings versuchen damit die Auslöschung ihrer eigenen Vergangenheit, und selten zuvor haben die Absichten einer Band so gut zum Sound ihres Aufnahmeleiters gepasst.

Simian Ghost are quintessential Scandi-poppers, with their bright and breezy summer music for a chart that no longer appears to be open to such things, their highly polished surfaces, sugar-coated choruses and breathy vocals that sound not so much androgynous as exquisitely sexless. Simian Ghost – like Phoenix and Tahiti 80, those groups from that other nation that specialises in this sort of immaculately shiny never-never pop – make hit records for that alternate reality where Prefab Sprout’s When Love Breaks Down and Cars and Girls were number one for weeks.

Actually, Prefab are an apt comparison for Simian Ghost, being less a fully-fledged band than a vehicle for singer, writer and producer Sebastian Arnström, the Paddy McAloon of the piece. Only when things get too multilayered and complex, or a degree of heft ("muscularity" is probably the wrong word for such a fey, diaphanous sound) is required, does he call on fellow musicians Erik Klinga and Mathias Zachrisson.
Just as McAloon went against the Smiths-y, rocky grain in the mid-to-late-80s with his airy, intelligent, studio-perfect pop, so too does Arnström seem to be operating at right angles to everyone else today. The track names on Youth – Automation, Sparrow, Siren, Fenix – might not be quite as piquant as previous Simian tracks such as Gay Is the Colour of God or The Solemn Light of Observation, but don’t be fooled by the titles: this is tricksy, flamboyant stuff, from the shimmering Wolf Girl to Curtain Call, which like everything Simian Ghost do has a translucent quality, a lightness of touch, that belies the fact that there are indeed rock guitars, bass and drums being played here.

Whether they can capitalise on their early, local success with 2010 debut album Infinite Traffic Everywhere, highly regarded in critics’ circles in Sweden, remains to be seen – it’s perhaps too subtle and intricate for a marketplace accustomed to being bashed about the bonce by rave-fuelled RnB – but if your palate fancies some tuneful sweetness, Youth will melt in your mouth.

The Jealous Sound - "A Gentle Reminder"

After taking time away from the band, frontman Blair Shehan reconnected with founding guitarist Pedro Benito, whose friendship with Nate Mendel (Foo Fighters) helped The Jealous Sound land an opening spot on the 2009 tour for the bassist's previous band, emo pioneers Sunny Day Real Estate. The old juices started flowing.

Made in the Foo Fighters' Studio 606 with John Lousteau producing, ''A Gentle Reminder'' features founding members Shehan and guitarist Benito working alongside Mendel (filling in on bass for the departed John McGinnis) and new drummer Bob Penn. Josh Staples (the Velvet Teen) contributes backing vocals and bass on two tracks.

How the quartet coalesced to recapture the magic is a labyrinthine tale that covers three states and includes a lot of emotional baggage. The life lessons are revealed in the grandeur of the new album, a poignant and emotional triumph that not only proves a worthy successor to ''Kill Them With Kindness'', but reveals the foursome at the top of its craft. Open[hearted, yes, but not really gentle at all, ''A Gentle Reminder'' represents a 44[minute epiphany set to cascading guitars, thundering rhythms and Shehan's evocative vocals.

Sleigh Bells – Reign Of Terror

Zitat:„What the fuck’s up?“, schreit Alexis Krauss‘ Stimme dem Publikum gleich mal zur Eröffnung entgegen, kurz darauf setzt Derek E. Millers Metal-Riff-Gitarre ein und die zwei Hauptzutaten von Sleigh Bells, die uns den Rest des Albums „Reign Of Terror“ begleiten werden, sind schon mal vorhanden. Ja, Sleigh Bells sind keine Freunde von kleinen Gesten, sie wollen das Stadion, denn ihr Prinzip lautet: „Mitten in die Fresse“. Der Pressetext zum Album beschreibt den Sound von „Reign Of Terror“ als „the sonic equivalent of a beautiful shotgun to the head“.
Keine Rücksicht auf Verluste – „You gotta deal with it“, meint Krauss auch mit einem Gewehr in der Hand auf einem Bett hüpfend im Video zur Single „Comeback Kid“, dem Albumvorboten, der einem schnell wieder klarmachte, warum man so auf „Reign Of Terror“ gewartet hat. Denn es ist diese oben schon angedeutete Mischung der Popaffinität von Krauss, erweitert durch den Punch der harten, manchmal Van-Halen-artigen Riffs von Miller, die Sleigh Bells auszeichnet und ihre Songs im besten Fall so großartig und euphorisierend machen. Im schlimmsten Fall ist dies zwar auf Albumlänge ein wenig eintönig, da es Sleigh Bells auch auf „Reign Of Terror“ genau wie beim Vorgänger „Treats“ nicht gelingt, die Qualität von Tracks wie „End Of The Line“ oder eben „Comeback Kid“ über die ganze Strecke zu halten, aber das ist hier vernachlässigbar. Denn sein Übriges, um die anfängliche Sympathie beim ersten Hören in schiere Begeisterung umkippen zu lassen, tut die „Larger-than-life-Coolness“-Attitüde der beiden, die meilenweit vom langweiligen Authentizitätsgehabe so vieler heutiger Indie-Bands entfernt ist. Wäre der Indie-Zirkus ein Schulhof, wären Sleigh Bells die gut aussehenden, coolen, älteren Schüler, die in der Ecke rauchen. Natürlich kann das objektiv lächerlich wirken, wenn man will, ist aber 2012 so unterhaltsam und interessant wie Bon Iver einschläfernd. Es wurde auch Zeit, dass The Kills auf ihre (für Popbands gesehen) alten Tage eine Wachablösung bekommen, denn die Kids brauchen Stars, die sie anhimmeln können.
