Canon Blue - Rumspringa

The album is a head-spinning tapestry of strings (provided by Icelandic quartet Amiina), horns, and electronic beats that come together to create an unlikely but irresistible mix.

Orchestral pop has never been as toe-tapping as it is on the album opener "Chicago (Chicago)". The melodies and grooves capture the listener's imagination on songs like the bright "Indian Summer (Des Moines)", "Valenteenager (Minneapolis B)", and the twinkling "Bows & Arrows (Vegas)".

You'll get lost in the moment on the beautiful "Lulls (Memphis)", and "Honeysuckle (Milwaukee)". The latter being just about as pastoral as electronic-based music can get. The tumbling rhythm of "Fading Colors (Bloomington)" sweeps you away as it gathers momentum.

The most impressive track is "Autark (Nashville)". James manages, somehow, to make that song both sweeping and intimate in feel.

I usually don't go for the electronic music. I find it often sags and can't keep me interested for the long haul. Canon Blue has definitely come up with an exception to the rule.

wir sind hier doch nicht bei den Neuerscheinungen.. und selbst da kann man die Mirrors nicht oft genug erwähnen.



Olivia Broadfield - Eyes Wide Open

Her tracks are finessed to Mandy Moore's pleasant temperament, but the attitude is all Olivia Broadfield.

The restive strokes of "Hang On" bode well with Broadfield's soothing register, and morph into a balmy rustling in "Lost In You." A few tracks have a springtime freshness like "Holding Onto You" and "The Weight," but the nursery rhyme scheme in the rhythmic patterns of "Don't Cry" has a cheery sprint that tows audiences right along with its merriment. The ethereal souffle of winged synths spanning across the title track have shimmery echoes which convert to an upbeat, techno-pop dancetrack in "Crashing Down" that is made for clubs. The soft rock trimmings have a breezy feel in the spacey synths, which make the tracks feel airy and pliable in Broadfield's touch.

Olivia Broadfield is the Olivia Newton-John of today's generation. Her songs are seamed in swirling riffs and plush synths that mortar soft rock dancetracks with silky raptures and ethereal lifts wrapped snugly around Broadfield's vocals. Eyes Wide Open is one of those pleasant sounding albums that will send you right out of a dark mood and into a sunny perspective on life.
